"If there's a book that you want to read, but it hasn't been written yet, then you must write it." (Toni Morrison). I figured the same goes for the systems that are supposed to support you.

Janice conceived Emora at 16 years old, growing up in Northern America and feeling the weight of student life firsthand: the stress, the disorganization, the lack of tools that actually understood what it felt like to be a student.

Rather than waiting for someone else to build it, Janice started designing and developing Emora herself, a platform that treats emotional wellbeing and academic organization as equally important, not competing priorities.

a student felt it firsthand

Janice, 16, was navigating the pressure of high school: the overwhelming assignments, the emotional exhaustion, the lack of tools that actually understood what it felt like. Nothing on the market truly helped.

This page is written for school administrators and staff reviewing Emora, so you know exactly what students would be doing in the app and how their information is handled, before any student uses it.

what students actually do in Emora

Students use Emora to organize their own schoolwork (a personal task planner), log daily mood check-ins, run focus/study timers, and optionally match with classmates for anonymous study sessions. There's a lightweight rewards system (in-app "gems") and a companion character that responds to their progress: no chat with strangers, no public profiles, no follower counts.

Emora is built for students, including students under 13. We designed both the product and this policy around minimizing what we collect, not maximizing it.

what we collect

Basic account info (name or username, grade level, school if provided), study/task activity within the app, and mood check-ins you choose to log. We do not collect precise location, and we do not require a phone number to use Emora.

how we use it

Solely to run the app for you, showing your tasks, tracking your streaks and progress, and (if you're part of a school's licensed program) sharing calm, non-graded progress indicators with that school. We do not sell student data, and we do not use student data for targeted advertising, ever.

parents and guardians

If you're a parent or guardian of a student under 13 using Emora, you have the right to review, request deletion of, or refuse further collection of your child's information. Reach out using the contact info below and we'll respond promptly.

data retention & deletion

We keep account data only as long as your account is active. You (or a parent/guardian, for younger students) can request full deletion of an account and its data at any time.

who we share with

We don't share student data with third parties for marketing or advertising purposes. Limited, non-identifying progress data may be shared with a student's own school if Emora is used through a school-licensed program, never sold, never shared outside that relationship.

Emora is meant to feel calm and usable for every student, including students who use assistive technology or have a disability. We're actively working toward alignment with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1, Level AA.

what we're working on

Clear color contrast, keyboard navigation throughout the app, screen-reader-friendly labeling, and avoiding reliance on color alone to convey information (like progress or status).

where we are today

Emora is early in development, and accessibility work is ongoing rather than fully complete. We'd rather be upfront about that than overstate where things stand.
